If you want to make sure you get ahead in your career as an engineer, but are doubtful that social biases will get in the way, read the below tips that will help you get to where you want to be.
1. Get accredited from a well known institute
Whether you continue in engineering design or decide to become a project manager, getting accredited will help you tremendously.
Get your :
P.Eng (professional engineering license in Canada)
PMP (project management professional) license
or any other relevant title/license from a well known institute.
Getting acknowledged by a well known institute will automatically give credit to your name.
2. Strengthen your references
As you get more experience in the field and apply for higher positions, your references are going to be that extra push to get you a competitive position.
Do NOT be afraid of building professional relationships with people in high positions. You never know who is willing to help in your career.
And if you are in the high position, don’t forget to help others in their careers.
3. Your capability is your biggest asset
Knowledge is not your biggest asset, neither is your experience.
Your capability to use your knowledge in your experience to add value to a project/company/your own life is what will get you ahead.
You could read all the book in the world but if you don’t apply that knowledge, how will you succeed?
You could also have experience in the biggest companies in the world, but if you don’t learn what you’re doing, you won’t last long.
Build your capabilities by continuously learning and applying that knowledge in real life situations.
You’re capable of great things.
